Diagnostics

On Board Diagnostics

Since 1992, Accutest has been recognised as leading the field in the implementation of diagnostics led solutions. Accutest has been a working member of the leading standards committee- the International Working Group for ISO and SAE Standards for Diagnostics, setting the international standards for On-Board Diagnostics (OBD and OBDII and EOBD). This close involvement with the standards group has led to an unparalleled understanding of the technical aspects - and of the application of these standards to the provision of effective diagnostics in application.

The Diagnostics Solutions Group is involved in providing cost effective and innovative solutions for established customers in the Automotive, Van, LCV and HGV, Off - Highway and Hybrid Vehicle Sectors. A range of Interfaces for on-board and off-board applications have been developed using the Accutest Vehicle Gateway (AVG) as a generic hardware platform.

Accutest has produced a range of interfaces for all vehicle type, for all types of Diagnostics and cover all the protocols in one box:

  • OBDII
  • EOBD
  • KWP2000
  • ISO 9141-2
  • J1939
  • J1850
  • J1708/J1587
  • ISO 15765
  • CAN
  • FlexRay
  • MOST

This now means that the typical mixed fleet can be successfully addressed by applying a single solution to deliver all required diagnostic information from every vehicle. No need to use different offerings that can only deliver partial solutions or address only the easy to cover parts of the fleet. No need to face the problems and difficulties of integration of differing data streams into your back office solution - or even worse, using multiple back office systems that are not designed to integrate at all!

Benefits of using Accutest:

  • Only solution that covers ALL vehicles including HGV, LCV, vans, cars and car derived vans with a single interface
  • Member of the International Working Group for ISO and SAE standards for Diagnostics ensures total understanding of all protocols
    • OBDII
    • EOBD
    • KWP2000
    • ISO 9141-2
    • J1939
    • J1850
    • J1708/J1587
    • ISO 15765
    • CAN
    • Flexray
    • MOST
    • LIN
  • Proven delivery of On-Board, Off-Board or remote diagnostic solutions
  • Proven delivery of handheld and wireless solutions
  • Solutions already delivered in:

    • OBD
  • Rugged hardware for reliable deployment
  • Flexible and low cost project delivery using proven solutions and experience

Attacking Costs: Vehicle Choice

Diagnostics data can now provide real time evaluation of the performance of different vehicles and show the true costs and the advantages that differing vehicles or options really deliver and can show for example:

  • Which vehicles are better in the city?
  • Which excel on the motorway?
  • Which are most efficient for particular journeys?
  • How effective are aerodynamic devices?
  • What build options should you select?
  • Cost per driver/journey/vehicle
  • Profit per journey/per vehicle/per driver
  • Profit per customer/per journey

Case Study

Our case study compared the results of 5 HGVs - firstly as built to original factory specification, and then with aftermarket remapped ECU software.

Fuel efficiency jumped from sub 8 mpg to 9.5 mpg average saving around £6,500 per annum per truck in fuel alone!

Attacking Costs: Vehicle Faults

Now you can download Diagnostic Trouble Codes as they appear and instantly receive a notification to enable the problem to be logged for future service requirements or immediately addressed if potential breakdown could occur. The most common causes of breakdown, battery condition, coolant temperature or leak, brake failure or electronic breakdown can be quickly addressed to keep vehicles moving. Scheduling of service and maintenance can now be proactive with identification of issues and timing of service on an as needed basis rather than relying on mileage, time or driver notification.

Breakdowns and failures cost time, money and cause customer dissatisfaction. We reported an example of a van driver who continued to use his vehicle for several weeks even though the front brake pads had worn through to the steel backing!

Accutest's diagnostic solution warns of any vehicle faults immediately they occur, often before the driver realises something is wrong.

That allows fleet managers make an instant decision on how best to handle the problem proactively to ensure duty of care issues are addressed.

Attacking Costs: Fuel Discrepancies

As true fuel usage is now possible by using the vehicle diagnostics to report actual fuel used and fuel remaining, it becomes obvious if fuel usage becomes inconsistent. Checks against fuel or credit card records immediately highlight differences and reduce improper mileage reporting or purchase of non approved items.

Case Study

The company in our case study automatically received a diagnostic warning of a 12% fall in fuel tank level overnight on one truck. The owner checked back through CCTV recordings of the yard and found footage of a driver siphoning 40 litres out of the tank!

But it's not only theft - it is lack of information and accuracy in mileage reporting, fuel card reporting, fuel card misuse, misreading odometer and other mistakes that can now be prevented.

Attacking Costs: Insurance Costs

Diagnostics will now make available to the fleet user information on driver style and vehicle condition and faults that will make decisions on safety critical issues more scientific and will lead to better maintained and better driven vehicles - leading to reduced insurance and accident costs.

Diagnostics will enable fleet managers to:

  • Profile driver styles and eradicate bad habits
  • Flag up vehicle faults which could lead to failure
  • Reduce accidents and Improve driver safety
  • Reduce insurance bill / accident costs

Case Study

One utility company reports 3-6% of drivers go metal to metal on brake pads without reporting the fault and claim 50% of their vans will have an accident in a 3 year lifespan.

Attacking Costs: CO2 and Emissions Reporting

Emissions based taxation is fast becoming a reality. Only by reporting precise fuel usage can emissions be exactly calculated. Any other calculation that is not based on actual volume of fuel burned cannot be accurate. CO2 emissions can only be calculated by using a mathematical formula that requires actual fuel used. By measuring fuel used to fractions of a millilitre Accutest can actually deliver precise emissions data that will deliver:

  • Reduced fuel bills
  • Reduced Carbon Footprint
  • Readiness for carbon trading and offsets
  • Readiness for emissions related taxation
  • Enable a green image to be projected with subsequent business marketing benefits
