LAPcan
2 channel CAN interface for the PC card (PCMCIA) bus
Download Datasheet
Features and Advantages
The Kvaser LAPcan is a two channel CAN interface for the PC card (PCMCIA) bus with two Philips SJA1000 CAN controllers. The CAN transceivers are built into the interface cables.
The most important features are:
- Quick and easy plug-and-play installation
- The CAN drivers (DRVcans) are exchangeable; see below
- Physical layer depends on the DRVcan type
- Ultrasonically welded card frame
- Supports both 11-bit (CAN 2.0A) and 29-bit (CAN 2.0B active) identifiers
- The on-board firmware will auto-detect the type of DRVcan
- Driver support for major operating systems
- PC card (PCMCIA) type II, on-board C161 16-bit microcontroller
- Large on-board RAM buffer for CAN messages
- Supports ”listen-only” mode for analyzing tools
DRVcan – cable, connector and CAN driver for LAPcan. For maximum flexibility and maintainability the CAN driver circuit is built into LAPcan interface cables. The Kvaser DRVcans must be purchased separately and are not included with the LAPcan.

Special Functions
Compared to previous Vector PCMCIA CAN interfaces, CANcardXL offers the following additional functions:
- Access to LIN bus.
- Greater throughput (35000 messages per second.)
- Precise time stamp (1µs time resolution.)
- Message preprocessing on the card to reduce PC loading.
- FPGA Update is possible at customer site.
- Precise measurement of bus load.
- Time synchronization with other hardware is possible via an external connection (Party Line.)
Software Support:
- 32-bit drivers for Windows 95/98/ME/NT 4.0/2000/XP, Windows CE and Linux.
- Kvaser CANLIB SDK, which includes everything you need to develop software for the Kvaser CAN boards. Includes full documentation and many program samples, written in C, C++, Delphi, Visual Basic, and C#. All Kvaser CAN interface boards share a common software API. Programs written for one board type will run without modifications on the other board types!
- On-line documentation (in Windows Help and Adobe Acrobat format)
- Documentation, software and drivers can be downloaded for free from www.kvaser.com, or they can be purchased in CD if preferred. Updates to the software are regularly posted on the web.
Driver support for National Instruments DIAdem is available as a separate product. Please contact us for more information.
